About Me
Following in my dad's footsteps

My dad and all his brothers are in the building trades, and I always knew I wanted to have a job like them. I can't imagine staying inside all day and slaving away in front of a computer screen. As soon as I could I started on my apprenticeship so I could get qualified and start earning the big bucks. I am going to be a roofer like dad, and maybe I'll take over his business one day. It's a slog getting through your apprenticeship, but I can see how dad has turned out, and it makes all seem worthwhile. I want to follow in his footsteps.

Is Forklift Operating Right for You?

Jordan Bailey

Forklift operating is an essential service on many industrial job sites and in the majority of commercial retail and warehouse spaces. Because this occupation is in high demand, the job of a forklift operator can provide reliable income for qualified individuals.

However, because forklifts are high-powered and heavy pieces of machinery, they require specific certification, equipment, and physical stamina to operate. This article discusses each of these requirement categories.

Certification and Education Requirements

Different forklift projects require different levels of certification. However, all forklift operators must be at least 18 years old, complete a training course, pass a test and have the correct licensing for each project they work on. A high school diploma is not required to sign up for a forklift training course.

There are two types of forklift license, LO and LF. LO licenses allow the holders to operate only a picker or stock picker forklift. An LF license allows the holder to operate all other varieties of forklift.

Equipment Requirements

Most of the equipment used in the course of a forklift project is provided by the company or property manager. For example, the forklift itself and the items the operator moves using the forklift come from the forklift operator's employer.

Additionally, employers almost always provide the safety equipment that a forklift operator wears on the job. This safety equipment may include a hard hat and high-visibility vest.

The forklift operator is responsible for any supplemental safety gear they wish to use, such as support gloves. The operator must also come to the job site dressed in appropriate work attire, including closed-toe boots and comfortable clothing that allows full range of motion.

Physical Requirements

Forklift operators must meet the same physical requirements as most other drivers, like long-haul truck drivers, crane operators and so on. Namely, forklift operators must be able to:

  • Climb into and out of their forklift without difficulty
  • Focus on the task at hand, even during long work hours
  • Notice, identify and respond appropriately to the situation around them
  • Operate hand-held controls correctly
  • Sit for long periods of time in a vehicle that generates a high amount of vibration

Forklift operation is not a strenuous occupation. However, this job may not be right for individuals with mobility limitations, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatic nerve pain or similar conditions.

Think forklift operating could be the right job for you? Sign up for a forklift license training course to get started.
